I have worked for many doctor’s offices over the years and I have a few tips for people when going to the doctor.
- Do your paperwork online- This is more of a privacy issue than anything else. Yes it will save you from having to hand write all of your medications and surgeries but it will also help keep that communication between you and the doctor! Because when you wait to fill out your paperwork in office, it does not go directly into the software like it would if you did it online. That means that whoever is at the front desk has to manually enter it into the computer from the actual paper form you filled out. Which means that Suzie Q knows about your constipation, tarry stools, hemorrhoids, erectile dysfunction, HIV, gas/ bloating, autoimmune disease or history of suicide in the family. I personally would want to keep that private. Yes HIPAA protects that information, but that doesn’t mean that Suzie Q isn’t judging you or thinking about those thing each time you check into the office.
- If you don’t do paperwork online- Please don’t be fancy with your writing. You are not impressing anyone with your wild penmanship. The front desk just needs to be able to read it. So take extra care when writing contact information such as address, email, phone number, and emergency contact name and phone number. It seems like a “no brainer” but you would be surprised.
